TIRUVARUR: The district police have made a breakthrough in the sensational top jewelry store heist case here, following the arrest of one of the gang members Manikandan of Madapuraam near Tiruvarur late on Thursday night. He was nabbed by the police and cops seized about four-kg of stolen jewels from him, during a vehicle check at Vilambal near Tiruvarur last night.

However, Suresh, hailing from Tiruvarur, who accompanied Manikandan, who initially  escaped from the scene, was later arrested by police

On information, a police party led by deputy commissioner of Police Mayilvaganan went to Tiruvarur and took custody of Manikaandan and moved him to an unknown destination for further investigation.

Meanwhile, Tiruvarur police took Ms. Kanagavalli, mother of the escaped suspect Suresh and four other relatives of the gang leader Murugan who is also a relative of Suresh and are holding inquiries with them about the whereabouts of Suresh and Murugan.

Police sources said Murugan is a wanted offender allegedly involved in some bank robberies not only in Tamil Nadu but also in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry.

A couple of years back Andhra Pradesh police arrested Murugan and his associate in connection with a bank robbery there and within a few months, he came out of bail. The police suspected Murugan might have slipped to Sri Lanka by the sea route.

Police also suspect Murugan’s hand in the bank robbery that took place at nationalised Punjab National Bank branch at Bikshadaarkovil near Tiruchy in January this year.
