US: India Will Return to Trade Talks, Trump to Decide on Modi

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Friday that India may return to trade talks with Washington within the next one or two months.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, he said: “India will come back to the table, they will say they are sorry, and they will try to make a deal with Donald Trump. It will then be up to Trump to decide how to deal with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Lutnick also said India is avoiding opening its markets, continues to buy oil from Russia, and is staying with the BRICS group. According to him, the United States, as the largest consumer market in the world, has more power in trade talks. “The consumer is always right,” he added.

His comments reflect the ongoing strain in trade relations between India and the US, with future negotiations depending on how the US leadership chooses to engage with New Delhi.
