AI Predicts Extreme Floods and Droughts Ahead for Pakistan

A new study led by Professor Jonghun Kam at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) has issued a stark warning about Pakistan’s future. Using artificial intelligence (AI), researchers found that the country is likely to experience repeated cycles of “super floods” and “extreme droughts” in the coming decades.
The study highlights how accelerating global warming will push Pakistan into an era of extreme and unpredictable weather events. As a nation in the Global South, Pakistan already struggles with limited infrastructure and technological capacity to forecast and manage such crises.
Researchers caution that these conditions could lead to widespread damage to agriculture, displacement of communities, and economic instability. Unlike short-term weather events, these patterns suggest long-term risks that demand immediate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Experts argue that Pakistan must invest in climate-resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and sustainable water management to reduce the devastating impacts predicted by the AI model.
This research serves as a reminder that the growing climate crisis is not confined to one region but threatens nations worldwide, particularly those with fewer resources to respond effectively.
