Men and Osteoporosis: Breaking the Myth Beyond Women’s Health
Osteoporosis isn’t just a women’s disease—men over 50 must also prioritize bone health to prevent fractures

Osteoporosis is often perceived as a condition that primarily affects women. However, this belief overlooks a significant health concern for men, particularly those over the age of 50. Studies indicate that between 8% and 20% of men in India suffer from osteoporosis, and the prevalence rises steadily with age.

Many men are taken aback when they receive an osteoporosis diagnosis, as bone health is rarely on their radar. The silent nature of the disease makes it especially dangerous. Often, osteoporosis remains undetected until a fracture occurs—commonly in the spine, hip, or wrist. These fractures can lead to serious complications, reduced mobility, and a decline in overall quality of life.

Early awareness and proactive management are essential. Lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercises, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol can strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. Routine screening and bone density tests for men over 50 can help identify osteoporosis early, allowing timely intervention to maintain bone health.

Breaking the myth that osteoporosis is solely a “women’s disease” is critical. Men need to recognize their susceptibility and take steps to protect their bone health, ensuring an active and fracture-free life as they age.
