Farmers in Madurai Shift to Tur Dal Cultivation as Prices Surge

In Madurai, farmers are shifting their focus to tur dal cultivation amidst rising prices and favorable agricultural conditions. Initially, delayed water release dampened interest in the Kuruvai paddy crop. However, recent water releases from the Vaigai River and consistent rainfall have rejuvenated farming prospects across the region.

Before the water release, only about 2,000 hectares were earmarked for paddy cultivation. With the recent infusion of water, agricultural officials anticipate an expansion to over 3,000 hectares by the end of July for the Kuruvai season, particularly in areas like Kallandiri and Vadipatti.

Tur dal, known for its lucrative market price, has caught the attention of farmers this season. Agriculture department officials report a significant interest in cultivating tur dal alongside the traditional black gram. Last year, Madurai saw cultivation on over 1,700 hectares for tur dal alone.

Reflecting on the market dynamics, farmer Sathuragiri highlighted the disparity in prices: “Retail prices for tur dal currently range between Rs 180 to Rs 200 per kg, whereas farmers received around Rs 60 per kg last year. Despite strong market demand, farmers faced challenges in obtaining fair prices for their produce.” He emphasized that improved pricing could incentivize larger-scale tur dal cultivation in Madurai.

With favorable weather and renewed farmer interest, Madurai’s agricultural landscape is poised for a dynamic shift towards more profitable crops like tur dal, signaling potential economic benefits for local farmers amidst evolving market conditions.
