The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo-moto cognisance of the spurious liquor deaths in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district. Issuing notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police, the NHRC has demanded a detailed report on the tragic incident within a week.

On June 18, toxic liquor claimed the lives of 59 people in Karunapuram village. The NHRC emphasized the state’s responsibility in regulating intoxicating liquors, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The NHRC has requested a comprehensive report covering the status of the FIR, actions taken against negligent officers, the treatment of victims, and the disbursement of compensation to the victims’ families.

Additionally, the NHRC has considered media reports, acknowledging that the incident, if accurately reported, represents a severe violation of the victims’ right to life.
