Ukraine Foreign Minister Resigns Amid Major Government Shake-Up

Zelenskiy’s decision comes at a critical time, with the war against Russia intensifying. Kuleba, known for his extensive international engagements and fluent English, played a key role in rallying global support for Ukraine. The resignation follows a broader shake-up, with five other ministers stepping down on Tuesday. The announcement of Kuleba’s resignation was made via a Facebook post by the speaker of parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk. Zelenskiy emphasized the need for government changes to ensure Ukraine’s success in the upcoming months. “Autumn will be extremely important for Ukraine,” Zelenskiy stated.
In the conflict’s latest developments, Russian forces are advancing in eastern Ukraine, while Ukrainian troops have made incursions into Russia’s Kursk region. Moscow has intensified its drone and missile attacks, and Kyiv has retaliated with a large-scale drone strike on Russian energy infrastructure.
The recent escalation in violence includes a devastating missile attack on Poltava, which killed at least 50 people, marking one of the deadliest attacks of the war this year. As the conflict continues, Zelenskiy plans to visit the United States later this month to present a “victory plan” to President Joe Biden.
Despite the turmoil, the Kremlin has indicated that changes in Ukraine’s government will not affect the peace negotiation process, which seems distant given the current standoff between the warring parties. Parliamentary committees are expected to review the resignations, with new appointments likely approved soon.
Zelenskiy is anticipated to nominate a new foreign minister on Wednesday, with Andrii Sybiha, the first deputy foreign minister, among the leading candidates. The reshuffle also includes the resignation of several other high-ranking officials, including the Strategic Industries Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
Critics, such as opposition lawmaker Iryna Herashchenko, have labeled the situation as a crisis of governance, urging for a national unity government to address the political and intellectual challenges facing Ukraine.
