Revitalizing Ooty Lake: Desilting Begins to Restore Natural Beauty
In a significant initiative aimed at restoring Ooty Lake to its pristine beauty, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has allocated Rs 7.5 crore for the desilting process, marking the first-ever comprehensive effort in this direction.
Arun Prakash, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of WRD, outlined the plans, emphasizing that initially, the focus will be on desilting the inlet point of the lake. This strategic approach aims to alleviate the buildup of sediment, which has been a persistent issue affecting the lake’s ecosystem and surrounding areas. “We will target depths ranging from 4 to 6 meters at the inlet, where silt accumulation has been most severe over the years. Weather permitting, the work is set to commence within a month,” Prakash stated.
The project, spanning an estimated 18 months, is contingent on favorable weather conditions to ensure optimal outcomes. Once completed, it is expected to mitigate issues like inundation along Ooty Lake Road and near the TNSTC Depot during the monsoon season. These problems have historically caused inconvenience to residents and tourists alike, disrupting travel and leading to traffic congestion.
Adding to the momentum of this conservation effort, eminent nuclear scientist J Daniel Chellappa recently conducted an inspection of the lake in collaboration with WRD, TWAD (Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board), Tourism officials, and the Municipality. Chellappa’s visit, guided by Tourism Minister K Ramachandran’s directives, aims to explore advanced technological solutions to address the lake’s pollution concerns.
Speaking to the media, Chellappa highlighted the importance of employing cutting-edge technology to purify the lake and enhance the experience for tourists, who often contend with unpleasant odors while enjoying boat rides on Ooty Lake.
The desilting initiative not only promises environmental benefits but also underscores a commitment to preserving Ooty’s natural heritage and bolstering its appeal as a premier tourist destination in South India.
